Ideation

There is a lot going on in the world right now. It's been difficult for me to think of content that's appropriate given the state of the world and the overarching sentiment between politics, racial injustices and of course, the global pandemic. I haven't really had inspiration about what to post or if I even should.

But, I recently decided that I'm going back to my roots and going to start focusing on the tools required to help build your own brand. I hope you’ll enjoy the forthcoming posts and I encourage you to comment & let me know what you’d like to hear more about.

Under what conditions can we produce an a-ha moment? How do you know what exactly you should be doing? Maybe you have an underlying urge to open your own business but you can’t quite put your finger on exactly what you should be doing. Maybe you’re working full-time and are confident that you can do it better than your previous employers. Regardless of what’s driving you, sometimes it’s difficult exactly what that idea is that you’re going to go to market with. Last year in March 2019, I posted some alternative ideas to help you figure out what it is you should be doing. It’s worth kicking off this series by revisiting some of those tips:

  • First and foremost, write it out. When was the last time you stepped away from the computer, took pen to paper and literally wrote something out? Sometimes that connection between your thoughts and physically manifesting in writing, creates connections that you never really thought of before.

  • Start off by writing out everything you are good at (maybe you’ve been told some consistent things in past performance reviews) and then write out everything you love doing. Step away from the notebook! Then, come back to it a few days later and see if there are any similarities between the two lists. Circle those things and see if maybe an idea pops up from there! Sometimes it doesn’t happen right away. Sometimes it can take a few months but just by starting off in that exercise you’re thinking about this in the back of your brain.

  • Not into writing out lists? Write a letter to your future self. Describe your dream job down to every last detail. Are you at a desk? Up and about? What’s your schedule like? Are you talking with people? Visualize yourself doing what you really love and describe it as much as possible.

  • Alternatively, talk it out with someone. Describe why you picked the career you’re currently in and talk about why you think you want to start up your own thing. Sometimes you might be asked some really great questions that you didn’t think of before.
